Watchers by Craig Priestley is an entertaining and gripping novel that will leave any reader on the edge of their seat!
The story follows Charlie, whose life is on a downward spiral. Not only is he dealing with personal issues, but his city is being plagued by a rise in crime and dread. On the brink of losing control, Charlie fights to save himself and the city he calls home.
I was unaware this was a debut novel by the author, but I have to say KUDOS for an amazing first book. The bright and mysterious cover drew me in initially. But the story packs a punch and each chapter will make you want to keep reading. I read the novel in one day if that tells you anything :-).
The characters seem real and relatable, which can sometimes be lost in multiple genre books. I enjoyed the mix of genres and it kept things interesting until the end. I appreciated the touches of humor throughout. I am a romance writer/reader, so I typically prefer light reads. The humor was a welcomed break in the otherwise "deep" plot. The author did a nice job with descriptive words and I am not going to lie, I am definitely picturing Charlie being quite attractive!
I thought the novel cut off abruptly at the end, so I was happy to see the epilogue. I would have liked more information about the characters in it, but I assume (which I hate to do, but here we are) that may be in a second book. I noticed repeating of certain words throughout the novel, but there wasn't enough to deter me from finishing.
I would give this novel 5 out of 5 stars. For a debut, it is well-written and exhilarating. I feel there is a lot more to explore with these characters, so I hope the author writes a sequel.
