Sky Watcher: A Shadow in Time by Heather Lynn is a fantastic read, that will keep you intrigued to the very end.
The novel follows Charlotte who is having a rough time coping with the loss of her mother, changing her studies, and dealing with a best friend who is now dating her ex. To take her mind off "life", she starts researching family history and realizes one of her ancestors was executed for witchcraft in the early 1900's. Charlotte believes she can change the course and save her ancestors life. With her "magical" stones, she transports herself back in time hoping to change the fate of her ancestor. Charlotte has no idea that her plan to save Elizabeth will lead her to love, family and danger.
First, I want to say CONGRATS to Ms. Heather Lynn on her debut novel. I will be honest, I don't usually enjoy time travel or historical fiction stories. But I was pleasantly surprised and loved the entire story. The dialogue and banter between characters is written beautifully. It will make you laugh and possibly shed a tear. The author gives each character their own "personality" and you get to know both the main and secondary characters.
Ms. Lynn does a wonderful job at describing the settings throughout. I was able to picture almost every scene. I felt like I was walking right along with the characters down the dirt road.
As I was reading, I was getting a history lesson. I found myself researching items that the author wrote about, which is why the novel did take me a bit longer to read. But that is not a bad thing. You get to read a great story and learn something. A WIN WIN for me!
I will let readers know that this story is adult. There are some moments that may make you uncomfortable, but the Ms. Lynn writes the content tastefully.
I would give this debut novel a 5 out of 5 stars! Sky Watcher exceeded my expectations and has changed my mind about historical fiction novels.
